Lake Colby stocked ahead of Colby Classic

SARANAC LAKE — Saranac Lake Fish and Game Club Membership Secretary Rocky Nogales says there are around $5,400 worth of tagged fish swimming around in Lake Colby right now.

On Tuesday, Doug Peck, Jon Herrman and Rinnan Weekes — fish culturists with the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s Adirondack Fish Hatchery — stocked the lake with 20 Atlantic salmon, brown trout and rainbow trout ranging from 2 to 6 years old and including one worth $800 for the club’s 40th Colby Classic Ice Fishing Derby this weekend.

The fish were stocked further out on the ice than normal because Nogales said they wanted to give people a better chance of catching them. The fish are worth big pay-outs. But they have to be caught on Saturday and Sunday between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. to be redeemed.

Among the groups of realtors, guides and sporting goods stores sponsoring fish, there are also several “garbologists.”

Nogales said Kevin Oddy with Oddy’s Trash Service gave him $100 to sponsor a fish and said he was challenging Daldon DeMarco of DeMarco Disposal to match him. He started telling everyone at the dump about this, so DeMarco found Nogales, gave him $200 and started telling everyone Oddy was being “cheap.”

Darra Wenske of Duff’s Dumpsters got word of this, gave Nogales $250 and said Oddy and DeMarco were both cheap.

This year marks the Classic’s 40th anniversary. The event draws hundreds of anglers each year.
