Firefighters battle Vermontville blaze, family of five displaced

VERMONTVILLE — A family of five was displaced by a homefire in Vermontville on Saturday.

The Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 174 Tyler Road at 2:25 p.m. Saturday. The fire was fully involved upon firefighters’ arrival. They contained the blaze to the house, but the house was a total loss. Firefighters were able to save a nearby garage. The family of five who lived in the home were out skiing for the day when the fire started. They lost a vehicle and their two dogs in the blaze.

Bloomingdale received mutual aid from the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department, the Paul Smiths-Gabriels Volunteer Fire Department, the Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department and the Saranac Volunteer Fire Department.

The Northeastern New York chapter of the American Red Cross is providing emergency aid to the family, including shelter, food, clothing, health services and stuffed animals.

A GoFundMe fundraiser has also been created to help the family. To donate, visit www.gofundme.com/doug-kehl-nicole-wylie-and-kids.
