Ski patrol member killed in chairlift accident at Titus

MALONE — State troopers responded to Titus Mountain Thursday afternoon after an incident on a chairlift that killed a ski patrol member at the ski resort.

Richard P. Finch, 68, of Malone, an employee at Titus Mountain Ski Resort, was on ski patrol when an accident occurred on the chairlifts, according to an email from Trooper Brandi M. Ashley, New York State Police Troop B’s public information officer.

Finch was pronounced deceased on scene, according to State Police.

Bruce A. Monette III, director of operations at Titus Mountain, gave a brief statement on the death.

“There are no words to describe the sadness felt by the Titus Mountain family. Our deepest condolences go out to our beloved patroller’s family and friends,” he wrote in an email to the Telegram, adding that a thorough investigation into the incident is currently underway, and no further information is available at this time.

According to police, at approximately 2:55 p.m., State Police responded to Titus Mountain, located on Johnson Road, in the town of Malone, to assist first responders at the scene.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, according to police.

State troopers were assisted at the scene by Malone EMS and Titus Mountain Ski Patrol.
