Tri-counties seeing mixed results for early voting

PLATTSBURGH — Through five days of early voting, local board of election officials are seeing a varied turnout.

Franklin County

According to the Franklin County Government website, there are 26,500 active registered voters in the county. Franklin County Deputy Republican Commissioner Bridget Furman said from Saturday to Tuesday, 167 residents had voted early. That number did not include the 20 or so included in Wednesday’s early estimate.

While there are four days of early voting still left, Furman said these early numbers actually represented a decrease from previous years.

“It’s a small election,” she said.

The early voting poll site for those in Franklin County is located at the Board of Elections Office at the Franklin County Court House at 355 West Main St., Suite 161, in Malone. Today, the polls are open from noon to 8 p.m., and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, they are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Essex County

In Essex County, the early voting numbers have exceeded expectations so far.

Essex County Deputy Democratic Commissioner Jennifer Fifield said in four days, 405 residents had voted early. As of midday Wednesday, that total racked up an additional 23 votes for a rough estimate of 428 through five days.

The busiest day was Saturday with 134 votes cast, followed by 71 on Sunday, 91 on Monday and 109 on Tuesday.

“It’s actually more than we thought it would be,” Fifield said, assuming the increased number of voters was due to the general election being held.

“That would be my guess. More people always turn out for a general than a primary.”

Essex County’s early voting poll sites are at the Lake Placid Beach House at 31 Parkside Drive in Lake Placid, and the Essex County Public Safety Building at 702 Stowersville Road in Lewis. For the last four days of early voting, polls at these sites are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Clinton County

Early voting numbers in Clinton County have also seen an increased turnout from previous years.

According to the Clinton County government website, there are 48,369 active voters in the county. With just about an hour left to vote Wednesday, a Clinton County Board of Elections official said the first five days of early voting saw 912 residents come to the polls. The busiest day for voting was Halloween with 204 people coming to cast their vote.

“We’re thinking people are getting more used to the idea of early voting and liking it.”

Residents of Clinton County can vote early at the Clinton County Government Center in the 1st Floor Meeting Room at 137 Margaret St. in Plattsburgh. Polls are open today from 9 a.m to 8 p.m., and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
