New ‘Reflection’ exhibit featured at NorthWind Fine Arts in October

SARANAC LAKE — NorthWind Fine Arts’ October co-featured artists are Angela Nephew and Mary Woodcock Johnson.

Their show is titled “Reflection” and features a combination of paintings and glasswork. The gallery is at 85 Main St., Saranac Lake, and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed Wednesdays.

Nephew is a kiln formed (fused) glass artist and has taken classes at Corning Glass Museum, The Glass Underground and the Davis Studio. She recently returned from Pilchuck in Tacoma, Washington. Of her workshops and how they influence her work, she said “they expand my glass techniques, and keep my work current and thoughtful and sensitive to world issues.”

“Reflection can mean so much — the return of light or a serious thought, it even applies to math. I made my kiln-formed glass for this exhibit with all in mind,” she said of the theme. “The light aspect is easy with glass but I tried to instill those pieces with the other definitions, too. I added a new technique that I hope will make you ask, ‘How did she do that?’ Give it some serious thought! Making glass artwork to compliment Mary Woodcock Johnson’s paintings was my final consideration and privilege. I hope you will visit our collaboration this month.”

Her other inspirations come from the land she walks, the waters she views, and the vistas she encounters.

“When I saw Angela Nephew’s kiln formed (fused) glass work I knew I wanted a joint exhibition with her,” Woodcock Johnson said. “A thoughtful approach to her work and the reflective quality of her pieces inspired me to create paintings that embody a similar perspective. While some of the pieces in the show actually feature physical reflections in windows, water and shadows, others are reflective of a musing as I walk trails here in the Adirondacks or during travels. All the pieces are contemplations on my surroundings.”

Woodcock Johnson’s oil, watercolor and, most recently, acrylic paintings are inspired by the natural beauty of the Adirondacks and her native state of Maine.

Their featured show will be on exhibit today through Oct. 30.

NorthWind Fine Arts is a selective cooperative gallery in Saranac Lake. It features the art of seven local award-winning artists whose specialties range from painting in all mediums and genres, to jewelry making, woodcarving, wood turning and glass making.
