Locals demonstrate in Albany for Medical Aid in Dying Act
ALBANY — A seven-member delegation from Adirondack Voters for Change joined a large demonstration organized by Compassion and Choices at the New York State Capitol Monday, demanding passage of New York’s Medical Aid in Dying Act.
Sixty-five people, dressed in black and bright yellow sashes, marched through the Legislative Office Building carrying signs marking the eight years that the act has been presented to the Legislature without passage.
Advocates who have died during these years asking for relief from their suffering were also memorialized by signs. Protesters from AVfC included Nancy Murphy, Jim Abendroth, Ginger Slater, Colleen Corrigan, Suzanne Gold, Carolyn Wiggen and Kary Johnson.
The Medical Aid in Dying Act would allow terminally ill, mentally competent adults to legally obtain prescriptions from their physicians for medication to end their lives when and where they choose.
This year, the act has been introduced in both the Assembly and the Senate. It is now in the respective Health Committees, waiting for a vote.
There are 16 co-sponsors in the Senate and 61 in the Assembly.
