Lake Placid, North Elba launch new website

LAKE PLACID — The village of Lake Placid and the town of North Elba on Tuesday launched a new, joint website.

While the town and village have had separate websites in the past, information for both municipalities is now centrally located at northelba.villageoflakeplacid.ny.gov.

The new website includes both town and village board meeting minutes, agendas and other information; a calendar of events for both municipalities; information about town and village departments; and a community tab where residents can find information about community resources, plans and projects. There’s also a new “How Do I” tab, with an FAQ-style menu directing people to information about how they can make appeals, pay a fine or fee, file a report, sign up for services and programs, and apply for local permits, municipal jobs and bid opportunities, among other information.

Haley Breen, the town and village community development director and one of the website’s creators, said that Tuesday’s unveiling of the website was a “soft launch” — the village’s former website is still up, and she’s working on redirecting the old URL to the new website. However, Breen said all of the town and village’s information is up on the new site.

Breen said the Community Development Commission — specifically member Kate Thompson — along with town Councilor Emily Kilburn Politi, village Trustee Jackie Kelley and village Clerk Anita Estling were instrumental in building the website. She said the Community Development Commission came up with the idea to build a joint website for the municipalities in hopes that centrally located information would be easier to navigate for residents and would keep the lines of communication open between locals and their government services.

“This is the first step in that process,” Breen said.

She said the development commission wants to eventually set up notification systems for different municipal departments through the website to better keep residents in the loop.

The town and village were awarded a $15,000 North Elba Local Enhancement and Advancement Fund grant in 2021 for the website consolidation project. LEAF grants are funded by revenue from Essex County’s occupancy tax.
