SARANAC LAKE — Do you always need to find a last-minute Winter Carnival parade costume idea? You might find it at the Roman around Carnival Fashion Show on Feb. 7.

Tori Vazquez, who owns Main Street Exchange, is hosting her first Winter Carnival fashion show at the Garagery on the Tuesday before the Gala Parade.

Vazquez has held fashion shows before, but this is her first for Winter Carnival. This is something she wants to do for every Carnival.

“I love themes. Themes are my thing,” Vazquez said.

She wanted to do a show last year, but indoor events were still difficult to do with the coronavirus pandemic at the time.

“Almost everything in the show is available for purchase,” Vazquez said. “It’s all second-hand upcycled.”

Some outfits feature pieces from local artists.

But the show will also be informational. Models will be describing how people can make their own costumes, like the ones at the show, at home.

Instead of a runway, attendees will dine and drink wine as models walk around to tables, explaining how their outfits were crafted and how attendees can make their own outfits, too.

Vazquez has supplies at her Main Street Exchange store — sheets for togas, cardboard for swords, even copies of the Enterprise made their way into the costumes.

She said Roman attire is not just sandals and togas. There are a lot of creative costumes to be designed, she said.

There will be three rounds of outfits, featuring different social classes from Roman times — slaves, commoners, gods and godesses, and politicians like Marcus Antony. Vazquez, obviously, is the emperor.

“It’s my kingdom. I rule it,” she said with a laugh.

She’s excited about putting this on and said the models are excited about playing the “characters” their outfits embody — from gladiators to toga-wearing frat partiers.

The show begins at 6 p.m. and doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at her shop or by contacting her at 518-891-8020. Tickets cost $23 and include a drink and food at the show. This is a 21-plus show.
