2023 Carnival button design revealed

The 2023 Winter Carnival button

SARANAC LAKE — “Doonesbury” cartoonist Garry Trudeau has released his button design for the 2023 Saranac Lake Winter Carnival.

Using the Winter Carnival’s designated theme “Roman around Carnival,” Trudeau’s illustration shows “Doonesbury” character Zonker as a Roman Emperor, depicted on the shape of an ancient coin with the year 2023 displayed in roman numerals. Trudeau, who was raised in Saranac Lake, has created the Winter Carnival button design since 1981 to benefit the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival.

The button costs $5 and will be available at the following merchants in Saranac Lake by the end of this week: Winter Carnival History Hut, Adirondack Bank (Main Street and Church Street locations) Adirondack Daily Enterprise, Adirondack Wine and Liquor, Ampersound, Bear Essentials Apparel, Blue Moon Cafe, Coakley Home and Hardware, Carcuzzi, Community Bank (Broadway) Fusion Market, Hyde’s Nice N Easy (Lake Flower Avenue and Broadway), Hotel Saranac’s Academy and Main gift shop, Kinney Drugs, Lakeview Deli, NBT Bank, Rice Furniture, Rusty Nail, Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, Saranac Lake Wine and Liquor, Saranac Village at Will Rogers, Saranac Lake Waterfront Lodge, the Village Mercantile and the Waterhole. This list is subject to change.

Buttons will also be sold during Winter Carnival at its gift shop and history hut, located on River Street at the Lake Flower boat launch. They are also available through mail order by sending a check payable to Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Committee, Attention: Barb Martin, P.O. Box 566, Saranac Lake, New York 12983. This mailing address is different than in the past, for those who automatically mail requests each year. Past Winter Carnival buttons are also available for $5. There is an additional cost for shipping based on quantity of buttons ordered: For one to four buttons, $5; five to eight buttons, $6; for nine or more, $8. Prices are subject to change.

The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Committee, known as the Society for the Preservation of Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Inc. is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization of volunteers dedicated to planning, presenting, and preserving an annual mid-winter festival. This 10-day, community wide event traces its roots to a one-day Winter Carnival held in 1897 by the Pontiac Club. The 2023 Winter Carnival will take place Feb. 3-12.
