‘Moment in Time’ opens at NorthWind next month

SARANAC LAKE — A new exhibit is opening at NorthWind Fine Arts in Saranac Lake next month.

The exhibit, “Moments in Time,” features photographer Russ Hartung and fine art painter Mary Woodcock Johnson.

Johnson’s new oil paintings explore landscape and animals of the Adirondacks. Walking local trails these past two years inspired her to paint the natural surroundings bringing color, form, and composition to her work. She found the quiet and beauty of the changing seasons inspired her to return to oil painting. While the seasons are frequent subjects, Johnson’s work in this show features many autumn pieces. She often works in series. Included in the show are paintings from her water-lily guests, and paths-in-the-woods series. Johnson’s previous work focused on figures and their environments; she has included one lone figure in the show as a nod to her painting history.

“For me, a ‘Moment in Time’ is the perfect description of my muse,” Hartung said. I’m happy to sit on a mountain top for hours waiting for the perfect moment where the light and shadow create just the right interplay. Sometimes I’ll wait in the woods, or in a photo blind, to capture the perfect ‘gesture’ from a wildlife subject, or I’ll get up early in the morning to capture the soft, moisture-laden landscape at a moment when most of the world is still asleep.

“My goal is to capture that moment and display it in a way that allows others to experience a little of that moment for themselves,” he said.

The gallery is located at 85 Main St. Gallery hours are daily, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
