SARANAC LAKE — The sounds of a father and son singing in harmony echoed over the waters of Lake Flower on Tuesday evening as local musician Andy Walkow and his father Bob shared the stage at the Saranac Waterfront Lodge, playing guitar together.

Andy plays at the Boathouse restaurant every other Tuesday afternoon, so when Bob, of Erie, Pennsylvania, came up to visit and see the grandchildren play sports and sing in the school chorus this week, they took the chance to play their first public gig together.

The father-son duo have played together for years, mostly fooling around at home.

Bob taught Andy his first chords on guitar. Bob’s been playing for most of his life.

“I started guitar in 1963 as a shortcut to learn chords for piano,” he said. “And then the Beatles came out.”

Suddenly, guitar was the coolest instrument to play.

He still covers Beatles songs.

“My father’s played in a Beatles tribute band for longer than the Beatles were playing,” Andy joked.

Growing up, his father’s friends all played instruments.

“Music was always there,” Bob said.

Andy knows this influenced him to pick up music.

Bob taught him the basic four chords on guitar right around when he found the “Led Zepplin IV” album. Then, he taught himself the rest.

Initially, he wanted to be a banjo player.

“And get all the ladies,” Andy’s wife, Erin, chimed in.

“That’s right. The ladies swooned,” Andy said.

Andy’s siblings are also all musical.

Bob remembers them all playing together at annual “Friday after Thanksgiving” parties.

“Really low, really fun,” he said.

Andy recalls playing at his brother’s graduation party in their back yard in Erie. His brother was playing the solo to “Down by the River” by Neil Young perfectly.

“But then the police came and shut us down,” Andy said with a laugh.

On Tuesday, he played some Neil Young with his father, as well as Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, The Byrds and James Taylor.

Andy plays at the Boathouse every other Tuesday afternoon, from 5 to 8 p.m.
