Scholarships for high school grads, non-traditional students

The Women’s College Scholarship Club participated in the Big Day in a Small Town at the Kate Mountain Park in Vermontville on Saturday, Aug. 14. Sue Alexander (left) sold many of her homemade cherry and strawberry rhubarb pies. Linda Beairsto sold raffle tickets for a basket with over $1,000 worth of gift certificates to local business. The more than $400 generated from the event will be used to award college scholarships to local high school graduates and adults continuing their education. (Photo provided)

SARANAC LAKE — The Women’s College Scholarship Club is offering nine scholarships of $1,500. There are five high school scholarships at $1,500 each for high school seniors and four Continuing Education Scholarships at $1,500 each. These scholarships are for residents of Franklin and Essex counties and are available to males and females.

High school scholarships are for students who are graduating from the Saranac Lake Central High School this year. The scholarship can be applied to tuition costs at any college, university or trade school.

Continuing Education Scholarships are for non-traditional students — adults who wish to return to school after a year or more away from high school graduation. They may use the scholarships in order to pursue a college career or change or enhance careers. Applicants must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. Part-time students may apply. Adults who have already begun a program are eligible to apply.

Applications, along with instructions for applying are available at the North Country Community College financial aid office, the Paul Smith’s College financial aid office, the Saranac Lake Free Library, the Women’s College Scholarship Club Facebook page and upon request to womenscsc@gmail.com.

Applicants must submit the following by Friday, May 13:

¯ The completed application

¯ A personal letter explaining goals

¯ Two letters of recommendation from non-family members

For more information, call WCSC Continuing Education Scholarship Committee Chair Elaine Holmlund at 518-891-6717 or Linda Beairsto at 518-637-9575.

These nine scholarships are made possible through funds contributed directly by club members and generous donors from the North Country community, along with the many fundraising activities of the WCSC.
