LAKE PLACID — There won’t be any construction work done along Main Street on Friday or Monday in observance of Memorial Day, according to local officials.
An update issued from the village of Lake Placid and town of North Elba for the week of May 23 details much of the work that continued this week. Crews were installing and testing a new 10-inch water main and began hooking up service once the tests were complete. Crews installed granite curb, and once that was done, they worked on fine grading the roadway. They also continued installing granite sidewalks and placed topsoil where it was needed.
“Crews are anticipating paving the roadway next Tuesday or Wednesday,” the village and town update announced.
Work along Main Street spanned most of the one-way corridor, which begins at the intersection of state routes 73 and 86 (top of Mill Hill) and ends at the top of Saranac Avenue, next to St. Agnes Catholic Church.
Hayes Street next to St. Eustace Episcopal Church was still closed as of Wednesday, as work there began last week at the intersection with Main Street. Marcy Road next to Starbucks was closed Monday but was open again by Wednesday.

Detours
–
In order to complete the Main Street construction project, detours have been established.
Southbound traffic is being redirected to Old Military Road — between the Ray Brook side of state Route 86 and state Route 73 at the North Elba Show Grounds.

Main Street is one way going north starting at the traffic light at the intersection of routes 73 and 86 (top of Mill Hill) to the intersection of Saranac Avenue and Hillcrest Avenue at the north end. This is an extension from last year’s detour route, which began at the public parking lot across from the post office. This change was made to accommodate additional water main work at the south end of Main Street.
Parkside Drive is now one way going south from the post office to Morningside Drive, and the speed limit has been reduced to 15 mph. Southbound traffic coming from Hillcrest will have to turn left onto Main Street and then right onto Parkside in order to get to the traffic light at the intersection of routes 73 and 86.
Two-way traffic is expected to resume on Main Street and Parkside Drive in July and August.
Also, Cummings Road became a one-way starting in April, when contractors for the state Olympic Regional Development Authority resumed exterior construction at the Olympic Center. Most of the current work there is being done between the 1932 and 1980 rinks, in what will be the main lobby and entrance to the new Lake Placid Olympic Museum. Two-way traffic on Cummings Road is expected to be restored by September.
Businesses on Main Street are still open daily.
There are temporary traffic lights at the intersection of Olympic Drive and Main Street and the intersection of Wesvalley Road and Saranac Avenue.
Parking is limited in the direct work areas. As crews move, parking will be restored.
Public parking lots are accessible, but there will be short periods of limited access due to work in and around those lots.
