Annual high school writing retreat returns

SARANAC LAKE — The Adirondack Center for Writing’s annual flagship teen writing event, the High School Writing Retreat, is scheduled for May 2-3 at Paul Smith’s College.

The ACW has hosted its annual High School Writing Retreat since 2005. It’s traditionally held in the fall, but this year’s retreat is in the spring because of last fall’s COVID-19 safety restrictions.

This free extracurricular retreat offers high school students from all over North Country the opportunity to learn creative writing from three renowned performance poets visiting from New York City. This year’s instructors are poets Karl Michael Iglesias, Roya Marsh and Jive Poetic.

The High School Writing Retreat is open to any student in grade 9 or above, including public, private and homeschool students. There is no cost to attend.

Students will enjoy poetry performances and learn to supercharge their writing with workshops, activities and readings. They’ll also meet over one hundred other North Country students interested in writing, allowing them to grow their literary community and find inspiration in peers.

Teachers can register a group of students through the form on ACW’s website; parents of homeschool students can register as well. For more information, visit adirondackcenterforwriting.org/what-we-do/events-programs/hswr.
