Forest rangers and State Police are searching for a 63-year-old man who was last seen hiking in the High Peaks on March 11.

State Police say Thomas A. Howard, of Westport, Connecticut, was reported missing on Wednesday after failing to return from a hiking trip on Mount Colden. Police say his last known location was at the Marcy Dam lean-to.

Howard is described as six-foot, one inch tall, 170 pounds and having gray hair. He was last known to be wearing a long red jacket, gray boots and snow shoes, according to State Police.

Howard’s niece, Jessica Paar, said he’s an experienced hiker. She said the search teams are looking around the Trap Dike trail up Mount Colden.

People with information are asked to contact forest rangers at 518-891-0235 or State Police at 518-891-2000.

State helicopters could be seen flying around the High Peaks on Thursday.

Paar said his family is hoping he’s found soon.

This is a breaking news story. More information will be added as it becomes available.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this article incorrectly said the hiker is 61; State Police later confirmed he is 63.
