SARANAC LAKE — A car flipped on its roof on River Street near the Ice Palace Thursday afternoon.

The driver was not seriously injured, but was carried to a Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad ambulance on a gurney and in a neck brace.

Tire tracks and witness reports at the scene indicated the car turned onto River Street from Lake Flower Avenue, hit an ice wall, rode up it and rolled over on its roof around 4 p.m. Thursday. The snow bank where snow plows pile up snow from the roads had frozen solid, acting like a ramp for the tires.

Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department members directed traffic on the busy road.

A tow truck driver hooked a winch up to the bottom of the car — which had become the top — and flipped it back over, landing heavily back on four tires.

The Madden’s tow truck did not have far to go. The crash happened two doors down from their River Street headquarters.

Saranac Lake Police Department officer Aaron Sharlow, who was at the scene, said the department was still investigating the crash Thursday afternoon.
