LAKE PLACID — Lake Placid veterans and their families gathered at the American Legion Post on Main Street Thursday to honor those who served in the military.
American Legion members held ceremonies at other places in the village and town earlier that day in honor of Veterans Day. They lowered a flag honoring Cyril Levitt and raised a flag honoring Charles Walker at the Adirondack Community Church; at Elderwood of Uihlein Lake Placid, a flag honoring Lawrence Maxwell was lowered and a flag honoring William Dennebaum was raised; a flag honoring William McCalvin at Adirondack Health was lowered and a flag was raised honoring Joel Mayberry; and at the North Elba cemetery, the old flag was lowered and a new flag was raised.
At the legion, chairs were set up for a small group of families and vets who gathered for the ceremony. A parade and luncheon are normally part of Lake Placid’s Veterans Day activities, but those events were canceled due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases locally.
Veterans lowered three flags at the legion honoring John “Jack” Kendrick, Neil Pratt and Norris “Bucky” Seney and presented them to surviving family members Patrick Moore, Teal Pratt and Kay McCasland, respectively.
Flags were then raised honoring Charles Daby, Roy “Pete” Durgan and Edwin Zampieri.

Daby was born in Lake Placid and served in the Army during the Korean War, where he earned two bronze stars. He returned to Lake Placid after serving, and he worked at the Lake Placid Club until it closed and the Mirror Lake Inn until he retired in 1998. Daby was a Yankees fan and enjoyed recording local weather.
Durgan served in the Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945, when he was honorably discharged, according to Lake Placid News archives.
Zampieri was also an Army veteran, serving in the Air Force and Infantry and earning the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star. He was the owner and operator of Santa’s Motel in Lake Placid, now known as Lake Placid Inn: Residences. Zampieri enjoyed traveling, walking and fishing.
Toward the end of the ceremony, Kimball Daby played “Taps” on the bugle as the crowd held their hands to their hearts, and a few construction workers at the Olympic Speed Skating Oval joined them from the other side of the fence. Hoffman presented magnets to some vets that were drawn and colored for them by students from St. Agnes school in honor of Veterans Day.
