BLOOMINGDALE — Voters here elected two new town board members on Tuesday — Stephanie Bolduc-Mikesell and Sheridan Swinyer. Incumbent Don Bates did not get enough votes to be reelected.

Bolduc-Mikesell got the most votes, 186, taking 37.2% of the vote. Swinyer came next, with 174, 34.8% of the vote. Bates garnered 139 votes, 27.8% of the total.

The Essex County Board of Elections sent 21 absentee ballots to St. Armand voters, so with a 35-vote gap between Bates and Swinyer, these would not be enough to sway the results of the race.

There’s a lot going on in the town currently. There are discussions of introducing a zoning code, infrastructure that needs updating and possible plans to tackle the region’s housing crisis.

Swinyer, a former town justice with “deep roots,” ran on the Common Sense party line. He said as town justice, he attended monthly board meetings and got to see how the town operates. He wants to invest in youth sports fields, implement zoning codes, if the public wants them, and temper “skyrocket(ing)” housing prices.

Bolduc-Mikesell ran on the Route 3 party line, named after the road she describes as “the main artery that ties the town together.”

She lives on the Saranac Lake side, and her husband, Ethan, owns Hex and Hop Brewing on the Bloomingdale side.

Bolduc-Mikesell moved to town two years ago and found out she was pregnant right as she started getting into the race. Her daughter is now one month old and she said she plans to raise her in St. Armand.

She had put her daughter to bed before she left to the polls, but her daughter was up and out again by time her mom got back.

“She wanted to get up and party to celebrate, I guess,” Bolduc-Mikesell said.

She said she was surprised to be elected, but said voters must be looking for change in the town.

She likes Swinyer’s ideas for the Youth Task Force.

“Making sure that the kids in St. Armand have the same options that the kids in Saranac Lake do,” she said.

Swinyer was not able to be reached by deadline Wednesday.

Bates was running for a third term on the board. He served on the board for eight years.

Town Supervisor Davina Winemiller was reelected to her position. She ran unopposed.

Nancy Heath, the town tax collector, and Doug Snickles, the highway department superintendent, also both won reelection in uncontested races.

Starting at $3.92/week.
