LAKE PLACID — Candidate names on this year’s Election Day ballots could be misleading for two town races in the Olympic Region, specifically for supervisor in Jay and town council in Wilmington.

In Wilmington, voters are being asked to choose two names for town council; however, only three of the four people on the ballot want the job.

Republican Stephanie Gates has her name on the Wilmington town council ballot but took on new responsibilities at her job at Northwood School in Lake Placid after her candidate petition was filed. She’s the executive assistant to the head of school and board of trustees and director of advancement services. Now she doesn’t have enough time to dedicate to the town council and her attempt to remove her name from the ballot was unsuccessful; it was too late.

If Gates gets enough votes to win a spot on the town council, she will not take the job; therefore, she is asking voters to cast a vote for independent Tim Follos (Locals First party line) instead.

“He’s a great kid. I think he’s going to do a wonderful job,” Gates said on Oct. 10.

The other two candidates are Republican Tina L. Terry Preston (also running on the independent Strong party line) and independent Michelle Preston, running on the For Wilmington party line.

Jay supervisor’s race

In the town of Jay, there are two names on the ballot for supervisor, but there is also one write-in candidate, according to the Essex County Board of Elections. Interim Supervisor Tom McDonald wants the job.

In June, Jay town Supervisor Archie Depo lost the Democratic primary election to challenger Matthew Stanley, who is also on the ballot on the Labor line. During the July town council meeting, Depo announced he was retiring as supervisor effective Aug. 1. During their August meeting, council members approved a resolution thanking Depo for his service, and McDonald, the deputy supervisor at the time, took the helm as interim supervisor.
