Brief power outage caused by downed tree

SARANAC LAKE — A power outage in the northern section of the village — which cut power to more than 900 National Grid customers on Sunday, including residents and several businesses — was caused by a tree that fell on a distribution line, a spokesman for the utility company said.

David Bertola, a spokesman for National Grid, said the outage lasted around 30 minutes and was restored after a National Grid crew removed the tree and repaired the lines.

Traffic lights were out at corners of Church and Main streets and Church Street and Bloomingdale Avenue. Drivers cautiously passed through the darkened intersections.

At the Stewart’s Shop on Bloomingdale Avenue, people continued to buy essentials and beer in the dark. Transactions were cash-only, so employees wrote down each purchase on paper and customers used the ATM, which was still working. Employees offered pizza slices at a reduced price, because they’d only stay hot for so long.

Steve Schlosser was checking out in Tops on Church Street when the power went out. The terminals went down, then all of a sudden, it was dark inside the store. The cashiers could only take cash or checks, so he had to go get more cash.

Nearby, the lights were on at Bitters and Bones on Broadway. Co-owner Johnny Williams said his bar is on a separate electrical grid, the Saranac Lake Communtity Solar Farm on state Route 86, which Adirondack Medical Center is also connected to.
