SARANAC LAKE — State Police are investigating a two-car motor-vehicle accident on state Route 3 near the Panther Mountain trailhead that claimed the life of a 37-year-old Saranac Lake man Friday, July 23.

Around 12:04 p.m., State Poilce responded to the accident in the town of Harrietstown. In a statement issued Saturday, police said a 2015 Subaru Impreza operated by Bernard J. McCormick II, of Saranac Lake, was traveling west and struck a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado operated by 33-year-old Nicholas Alonge of New Windsor, New York, who was traveling west.

McCormick died as a result of the crash. Nicholas Alonge was transported to the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake for a broken leg. A passenger in Alonge’s truck, 32-year-old McKenna Alonge, was transported by Life Flight to University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont, for a head injury. Emilia Alonge, 9 months old, was not injured. The Alonge family had been released by Saturday morning, according to State Police.

Several motorists who were on scene at the crash rendered assistance by removing the members of the Alonge family from their vehicle immediately following the crash.

The Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department said Friday afternoon that they responded to the collision at 11:58 a.m. Two trucks and 10 members responded. Tupper Lake Rescue also responded and called for mutual aid from the Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad. The SLVFD requested mutual aid from the Tupper Lake Volunteer Fire Department to close Route 3 from the intersection of routes 3 and 30 to the Panther Mountain Road. State Police did not release any information about the crash until 10 a.m. Saturday.

This crash remains under investigation.
