MALONE — Downtown Artist Cellar will host a reception for its pastel exhibit, “Playing with Pure Color” from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

The indoor/outdoor reception will highlight the work of local pastel artists as well as the emerging artists attending Anne Ray’s pastel class which meets every week to explore the art of pastel painting. Diane Leifheit will be the DAC featured artist for the exhibit.

Pastels are an artist material with a long history. Sometimes referred to as “dry painting,” the medium offers an incredible range of colors with the ability to blend hues in the same way that you would paint pigment. Leifheit has many solo exhibitions and noteworthy recognitions throughout New York state.

She defines her work as fine art pastel paintings of Adirondack faces, places and beyond; to capture the essence of these, to create resonance in the image is her goal. The evening will end with music under a tent of lights. The exhibit can be viewed 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday until Aug. 4.
