Moose killed in Route 3 collision

SARANAC LAKE — A moose was hit and killed by a vehicle on state Route 3 west of Saranac Lake around 2:30 in the morning Sunday, and at least one person was taken to the hospital.

The collision happened between South Creek and Bartlett Carry Road. Six firefighters with the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene at 5:22 a.m. to direct traffic, and New York State Police responded around the same time to investigate. Environmental conservation officers with the state Department of Environmental Conservation responded around 9:30 a.m., according to the DEC.

At least one person was transported to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. More information on the identity of the person, their condition and whether that person was the driver was not available by Sunday evening.

The moose died in the collision and was removed by ECOs. It was turned over to DEC wildlife staff, according to the DEC. The collision happened around 2:30 a.m., according to the DEC. The Saranac Lake fire department was back in service at 7:30 a.m.
