Local counties get grants for hazmat, cyber security

Franklin and Essex counties received grants from the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services for cyber security and hazmat teams.

The state awarded $7.4 million in homeland security grants to 76 recipients Tuesday.

Both counties were recipients of a grant for hazmat teams, along with Clinton, Hamilton, St. Lawrence, Warren and Washington counties. The $182,000 awarded will be split between all these counties.

A press release from Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office said these teams “respond to and recover from acts of terrorism and other emergencies.”

The counties can use this money to buy equipment, get accredited through the HazMat Team Accreditation Program, conduct training or develop and update hazmat response plans.

Franklin County also secured $50,000 to identify and fill gaps in cyber security.

“Funding may be utilized to mitigate capability gaps that have been identified through a risk assessment methodology,” the release says.
