Polls are open today at school districts around New York state. Voters will decide who will fill seats on schools’ boards of education, and whether to approve district budgets for the upcoming school year.

All three school districts in the Tri-Lakes region, boosted by federal coronavirus aid funding, have proposed budgets that fall below the state tax cap.

Budgets

Saranac Lake has proposed a $33.7 million budget, 0.3% higher than this year, with a 1.66% tax levy increase attached.

Lake Placid’s more than $20.7 million proposed budget — an increase in spending of 3.77% over this year — would carry a tax levy increase of zero.

Tupper Lake has proposed a more than $20.5 million budget for 2021-22, 5.89% higher than this year, with a 1.23% tax levy increase attached.

The AuSable Valley Central School District has proposed a more than $34.7 million budget, an increase of about 1.54%, carrying a tax levy of more than $14.8 million, an increase of 1.58%.

Keene Central School’s more than $6.7 million proposed budget, an increase of $404,029 — largely because of a $325,000 capital project payment and the purchase of a new school bus — carries a tax levy increase of 7.67%.

Long Lake Central School has proposed a budget of more than $4.6 million, an increase of about 4.9%, with an attached tax levy increase of 4.7%.

Board members

The Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake and Au-

Sable Valley districts have contested school board races.

In Saranac Lake, four candidates are running for three seats on the school board, including incumbent President Aurora White, incumbent Nancy Bernstein, Zachary Randolph and Justin Garwood. Candidate profiles are available in Monday’s Enterprise and online at www.adirondackdailyenterprise.com.

In Tupper Lake, there are three candidates running for two seats: incumbent board President Jane Whitmore and Vice President Jason Rolley, and one newcomer, Korey Kenniston. Profiles on these candidates were also published in Monday’s Enterprise and online.

In the AuSable Valley Central School District, there are three school board seats up for election and five candidates in the running. The candidates include Mark Allen, who is running for re-election; Patricia Gero and Jenna Beauregard running for the second seat, and Derrick Hopkins and Aubrey Bresett running for the third seat.

The Lake Placid Central School District has three seats up for election on its school board, but the races aren’t contested and all the candidates who are running — Daniel Cash, Martha Prichard Spear and Colleen Locke — are incumbents. There’s some competition in that the last-place finisher will get one year on the board instead of a full three-year term.

In the Keene Central School District, there is one candidate running for a seat on the school board, Emily Reynolds Bergh. Board member Aaron Miller has declined to seek reelection this year.

There is one seat up for election in the Long Lake Central School District and one candidate running: incumbent board President Brian Penrose.
