Chopping down, fixing up

Tom Bartiss (in the lift) and his Onchiota-based company Woods Edge Forestry cut down a spruce tree Saturday in front of the former home and office of Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau, a physician and scientist who transformed Saranac Lake from a tiny hamlet to a bustling tuberculosis cure center. Historic Saranac Lake is about to renovate the Trudeau Building, as it is called, but two trees — this spruce and a cherry, already cut — were too close to the house and had to be removed. The house was built in 1894. (Enterprise photo — Peter Crowley)
