RAY BROOK — The state Adirondack Park Agency is now accepting public comment on a proposed renovation of the Fish Creek Pond Campground.

The Department of Environmental Conservation, which runs the state-owned campground, wants to restore campsites, repave and reconstruct roads to accommodate two-way traffic, continue shoreline stabilization, build a parking lot at the Floodwood trailhead, replace the bathhouse, relocate and reconstruct the boat launch in the day use area and improve the bike path.

The agency is specifically seeking comment on whether the campground’s unit management plan conforms to the guidelines and criteria of the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan. The public comment period will run through June 14.

The campground is located on state Route 30, near Upper Saranac Lake and 12 miles northeast of the village of Tupper Lake.

Fish Creek Pond Campground is large and popular. At roughly 350 sites, it’s one of the biggest in the Adirondacks. When it and the adjoining 290-site Rollins Pond Campground fill up in summer, they create what feels like a small town. Fish Creek offers visitors forested campsites along a natural sand shoreline with water access for many of the campsites. In addition to camping, Fish Creek offers fishing, picnicking, swimming, bicycling, educational programs, hiking and boating.

Amenities include a beach, playground, boat launch, hot showers, flush toilets, trailer dumping station, firewood sales, volleyball and basketball areas. Boat and canoe rentals are available at the adjacent Rollins Pond Campground.

Unit management plans, or UMPs, are required by the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan for each unit of state land in the Adirondack Park. UMPs integrate the goals and objectives of the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan, related legislation, and resource and visitor use information into a single document.

All comments on the Fish Creek project can be sent to Richard Weber, deputy director of planning at the Adirondack Park Agency, P.O. Box 99, Ray Brook, NY 12977. Comments can also be emailed to SLMP_Comments@apa.ny.gov or faxed to 518-891-3938. If submitting comment by email, type the UMP name (Fish Creek Pond Public Campground UMP) in the subject line of the email message.
