Franklin County sees 12th COVID death

MALONE — A 12th Franklin County resident has died due to COVID-19 complications, officials said.

The resident, who was not a prison inmate, died after being hospitalized outside the county, officials said.

Franklin County on Thursday recorded 28 new positive cases of COVID-19 — with 18 of them found in Malone’s inmate population, officials said.

The total number of known active cases within the county was brought to 300 infections. This was controlled by 38 residents who cleared quarantine. Seven-hundred sixty-eight residents are still listed as either quarantined or isolated. One hundred ninety of the county’s active virus cases are attributed to infected inmates reported by the state’s Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. One hundred ninety positive inmates account for 63% of Franklin County’s known cases. Franklin Correctional Facility currently has 136 cases. Bare Hill Correctional has recorded 50 active cases, while Upstate Correctional has only recorded four cases.

Cumulatively among the entire county, officials suspect there to have been at least 1,970 cases of the virus since the start of the pandemic. Eighteen-hundred forty-one cases have been confirmed.

The county’s positivity rate as of Tuesday is 1.91%. The seven-day average is 5.71%. Statewide, the seven-day average on Thursday dropped to 4.16%, the lowest since Dec. 1, according to the governor’s office.

According to its Emergency Operations Center, the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe has surpassed 10 known active cases of COVID-19. Four newly discovered cases has brought the count under tribe jurisdiction to 11 infections. Two tribe members who were believed to have recovered from the virus Tuesday, have since re-developed symptoms and required hospitalization, tribe Director of Communications Brendan White said. Ten tribe members remain in quarantine.
