Food draws feathered tourists

For the past few weeks, flocks of pine grosbeaks like this one have been gorging on crab apple trees around Saranac Lake. According to Audubon magazine, this is an “irruption year,” when due to with a shortage of food in northern boreal forests, boreal birds fly south in search of food and U.S. birders are treated to more varied sightings.
