Police charge man who lost hand when homemade firework exploded

LYON MOUNTAIN — A man in this Adirondack hamlet was manufacturing fireworks when one detonated on Oct. 22, costing him his right hand, State Police say. On Thursday, police added a felony charge to his troubles.

Police charged 50-year-old Brett G. Smith of Lyon Mountain with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class D felony.

Police said they responded to Smith’s residence on Oct. 22 after hearing a report of an explosion at a home. He was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, police say.

Police later found that Smith had been manufacturing fireworks, and one had accidentally detonated.

“The explosion caused an amputation to his right hand,” police said in a press release.

Smith was given an appearance ticket Thursday and is expected to appear in the town of Dannemora court at a later date.
