Mid-November migration

A snowy owl takes off Friday from a cornfield along Lake Shore Road in Chazy. New York is at the south end of snowy owls’ winter migration range; they spend summers in Canada’s Arctic islands. Joseph Poliquin of Saranac Lake took and submitted this photo. Sara the snowy owl is the mascot of the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival each February. (Provided photo — Joseph Poliquin)
