Franklin, Essex counties report 11 new cases of COVID-19

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in both Essex and Franklin counties continues to rise.

Essex County reported six new cases of COVID-19, since Friday, on Monday. Franklin County reported five new cases on Monday.

Franklin County’s new cases on Monday brought the total number of active cases countywide to 56, including a few people who are isolating outside of Franklin County. There were more than 50 new cases of COVID-19 reported between Nov. 9 and Nov. 16, a significant uptick. Seven people were deemed recovered and removed from the active case list, though some COVID-19-positive people have reported experiencing symptoms weeks or months after they’re considered no longer contagious.

The daily test positivity rate was 2.17%, according to county Manager Donna Kissane. The average positivity rate over the past seven days was 2.9%. Since March, the county has seen 296 cases of COVID-19, some suspected cases by physicians and some test-confirmed. Two people died of COVID-19 last week. They were the only fatalities connected to COVID-19 reported in Franklin County so far.

As of Monday, there were 544 people in quarantine or isolation countywide. Most of the cases are in the northern end of the county, with the exception of Tupper Lake, where seven people are in isolation and 50 people are in quarantine, according to a map released by Franklin County on Monday.

There are 21 people in isolation in Malone and 167 people in quarantine. Ten people are in isolation on the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe reservation, with 100 more people in quarantine. The towns of Westville, Constable, Burke, Chateaugay, Moira, Bangor, Brandon, Dickinson and Bellmont have between one and three positive cases. Though there aren’t any positives identified yet, there are people quarantining in the towns of Fort Covington, Bombay, Waverly, Brighton and Harrietstown.

The only Franklin County towns that don’t have people in isolation or in quarantine are Santa Clara, Duane and Franklin.

In Essex County, one person was hospitalized with COVID-19 on Monday. Of the 14 total active cases countywide on Monday, five were in the town of North Elba, three in Moriah, two in Wilmington and one case each in the towns of Jay, Keene, St. Armand and Schroon. Of the 183 Essex County residents who have tested positive for COVID-19 since March, 169 have recovered, according to the county Health Department.

Statewide, the positivity rate was 2.80% on Sunday, up from 2.74% on Saturday, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office.
