Man charged with DWI after alleged horse buggy hit-run

DICKINSON — A Potsdam man has been charged with driving while intoxicated after colliding with a horse and buggy while attempting to pass it on state Route 11B Saturday morning. The occupants of the buggy were transported to the hospital.

State Police charged Howard D. King II, 33, of Potsdam with DWI after his blood alcohol content was determined to be 0.10%.

Troopers said that while they were en route to the collision at approximately 8 a.m., they saw a vehicle with heavy front-end damage leaving the scene. After a traffic stop on Franklin County Route 5, the driver was identified as King. An investigation revealed that he was traveling north on Route 11B when he tried to pass the horse and buggy, striking the rear of the buggy before hitting a mailbox at 65 Route 11B. Then he left the scene.

The driver of the buggy, David A. Schlabach, 54, and a 9-year-old passenger, Andy D. Schlabach, both of North Lawrence, were transported to the Alice Hyde Memorial Hospital in Malone with injuries. Two other teenage occupants, Jonas D. Schlabach, 17, and Mattie D. Schlabach, 14, were not injured.

King was released with appearance tickets.
