Essex Center death toll rises to 11

Another Essex Center resident has died after contracting COVID-19, the Essex County Health Department reported Friday.

The latest fatality brings the total death toll at the Elizabethtown nursing home and rehabilitation facility to 11 residents since Aug. 17: one person who received care at the facility but lived in Clinton County, and 10 who lived in Essex County.

Four new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed on Friday, all of them residents of the nursing home, bringing the total number of cases connected to the facility to 102. There were four active cases of COVID-19 countywide on Friday, according to the county health department. Three people remain hospitalized.

Altogether, 145 people countywide were under health orders to quarantine on Friday. Of those, 123 people were in quarantine for travel-related reasons, and 22 people were in quarantine after coming in contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19, according to the health department.

Franklin County had three active cases of COVID-19 as of Friday, no new cases since Thursday but up from two on Wednesday. Franklin County has had one COVID-19 death, according to the state Department of Health, though the county’s Public Health department has disputed that and says there are none.

Statewide, there were five recorded COVID-19 fatalities and 880 new cases on Thursday — bringing the total to 442,791 confirmed cases since March. The state’s infection rate was 0.98% on Thursday. The state infection rate has remained below 1% for 35 days, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office.
