Art & Discovery Kits for Kids seek funds for summer launch

JAY — A group of local artists and educators is working on an initiative to bring both art and science to the doorsteps of young elementary school students this summer.

The initial run of art supplies for Adirondack-themed projects or “Art & Discovery Kits” (ADK) for Kids is set to reach first- and second-graders from AuSable Forks Elementary School by early July. These ADK for Kids will feature projects related to Adirondack animal habitats from local artist and illustrator Sheri Amsel’s website, exporingnature.org.

Organizers are currently seeking donations to purchase art supplies and cover printing costs at roughly $25 per kit. As many as 66 families could benefit from this effort. If additional funds become available and there’s continued interest, the ADK for Kids project could extend to other grade levels at AuSable Forks Elementary School.

To donate online or by mail, or for more information, contact the project’s director and local ceramic artist Sue Young at suebyoung@hotmail.com.

If you’re a parent of an upcoming first- or second-grader at AuSable Forks Elementary School interested in an ADK for your child, contact Brooke Sorrell at sorrell.brooke@avcsk12.org.
