3 incumbents vie for Lake Placid school board

LAKE PLACID — Three incumbents are running for reelection to the Lake Placid Central School District Board of Education this year.

Joan Hallet-Valentine, Daniel Marvin and Jeffrey Brownell are seeking to retain their school board seats for another term. They face no challengers.

Mail-in ballots for the school board election and school budget must be received by June 16 — a week later than previously announced. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Sunday that the deadline for mail-in ballots for school elections would be extended. Friday, June 12 is the last day of school for Lake Placid students.

Joan Hallet-Valentine

Hallet-Valentine, 59, is a longtime caretaker for children. She has owned and operated Tiny Tykes Group Family Child Care in Lake Placid for more than 35 years. She moved here when she was 6 years old and graduated from Lake Placid High School in 1979.

She was first elected to the school board three years ago, following her appointment to a vacancy on the board with a seven-month term.

“I feel that I bring my heart to the table,” she said when asked why she chose to run for re-election. “I enjoy seeing all the wonderful things that can happen at the school. I am honored to work with such caring teachers, administration and staff. I also feel that I can help make a difference.

“It is also important to be a part of your community, and due to my profession, this seems like the right fit.”

She said she hopes to “continue to support the relationships with the school and the community, keep making informed decisions,” and in each decision she makes stay aligned with the board’s strategic goals. As far as what issue she believes needs to be worked on, she said the school board must “keep trying to close the opportunity gap.”

Daniel Marvin

Marvin, 47, is a local land surveyor. He was born and raised in Lake Placid and said he’s the third generation of his family to graduate from Lake Placid schools.

He was first elected as a write-in candidate three years ago. No one else was running for the seat at the time. Asked what issue he believes the school board needs to work on, he agreed with Hallet-Valentine: “To keep reducing the opportunity gap, so that all students have the same opportunities,” he said.

He did not respond on why he’s running for reelection and what his main priorities would be if elected.

Jeffrey Brownell

Brownell was first appointed to the Lake Placid school board to fill a vacancy in 2014. He did not respond to requests for comment for this story.
