Troopers charge Lake Placid man with DWI after he crashed, fled

LAKE PLACID — State troopers say a local man was intoxicated when he crashed his car and fled the scene Tuesday morning.

State Police say they responded to a report of a one-car crash on Mill Pond Drive, Lake Placid, at 6:32 a.m. They investigated and determined that Giovanni J. Sanfillipo, 23, of Lake Placid had been driving a 2020 Nissan Altima, lost control of it, drove off the north shoulder of the road and crashed into a guardrail. Then he fled the scene, police said. Police believe he was the only person in the car when it crashed.

Troopers said they found Sanfillipo at his home, where he refused testing to determine his blood alcohol content. They charged him with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and released him with tickets to appear in the North Elba town court.

(Update: This article has been updated to add the driver’s age, that police believe he was the sole occupant of the car and that the DWI charge was a misdemeanor.)
