Keene 18-year-old accused of sexual abuse of minor

KEENE — An 18-year-old male from Keene has been accused of forcibly sexually abusing a 14-year-old.

The older teen, whose name has not been released because he was deemed a youthful offender, was arrested by New York State Police this past Friday at 7:45 p.m. and charged with first-degree sexual abuse by forcible compulsion, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. The initial sexual abuse complaint was filed with New York State Police at 2:21 p.m. on Friday.

Essex County District Attorney Kristy Sprague said Monday that the alleged victim is 14 and said her office would not comment further on the case. State Police spokeswoman Trooper Jennifer Fleishman said no additional information will be released at this time since the investigation is still pending.

The 18-year-old was held after being arrested, police said, but police did not say where he was held. He was arraigned on Monday in a virtual appearance before Judge Richard B. Meyer, a county court judge who acted on behalf of the local court.

The defendant was released on the condition that he not leave Essex County, according to defense attorney Reginald Bedell. An order of protection was issued, barring the 18-year-old from contacting the alleged victim’s family or going near that person’s residence or school.

Bedell said Monday he would waive his client’s right to a felony hearing in court.
