CARES Act helps local subsidized housing

SARANAC LAKE — The federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act includes more than $9.2 million to help pay rent for tenants in subsidized housing — including $15,550 for the Harrietstown Housing Authority and $3,478 for the town of Jay.

The money was allocated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development under the CARES Act for Tenant-Based Rental Assistance, which funds the HUD Housing Choice Voucher Program. Additionally, the program covers increased subsidy and administrative expenses incurred by public housing authorities, such as the HHA, based in Saranac Lake.

Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer, both Democrats from New York, announced the news Monday.
