Essex County sees no new COVID cases for 5th day

LAKE PLACID — Essex County has seen no new confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 in the last five days.

This lull in new cases, as of Thursday, marks the longest stretch of time without a new case since last month, when there was a five-day lull in new cases between March 25 and 30. At that time, however, COVID-19 cases that were suspected by doctors but not test-confirmed weren’t being reported publicly — so it’s unclear if the number of suspected cases remained the same, too.

As of Sunday, the last day the number of cases had changed, there were 15 test-confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 14 suspected cases countywide, according to the Essex County Health Department. That includes three test-confirmed and three suspected cases in North Elba, not including two people who provided local addresses and were tested here, but were later found to live in another county or state, according to the county Health Department. There is one test-confirmed case in Keene and one suspected case in Jay. Three prison inmates in Essex County have tested positive. There are also test-confirmed and suspected cases in Crown Point and Moriah, test-confirmed cases in Essex and Westport, and suspected cases in Elizabethtown, Schroon and Ticonderoga.

While the number of suspected cases has slowly increased in the last few days in Franklin County — growing from 41 on Saturday to 54 on Thursday — there have been no new test-confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of this week, according to data provided by Franklin County Public Health.

There were 12 test-confirmed COVID-19 cases in Franklin County as of Thursday.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday extended his “New York State on PAUSE” executive order until May 15, effectively extending the closure of non-essential businesses. As of today, everyone over 2 years old is required to wear a mask in busy public places.

Residents are still encouraged to practice social distancing and self-isolate when possible. People with symptoms are encouraged to call the state’s COVID-19 hotline at 1-888-364-3065 or call their local hospital’s COVID-19 hotline.
