Village, town seek bids for Mirror Lake sidewalk repairs

LAKE PLACID — The village of Lake Placid and town of North Elba are moving forward with plans to reconstruct the sidewalk that circles Mirror Lake.

The town and village — through engineering firm Ivan Zdrahal Associates — each posted separate requests for proposals on Monday seeking a contractor to replace a stretch of sidewalk along Mirror Lake Drive and make improvements to the underlying drainage systems.

Part of the sidewalk is on town land, and part of the sidewalk is on village land — necessitating the two municipalities to work together on planning for this project, but issue separate requests. Bids for both requests are due by March 25.

The town and village are asking a contractor to demolish the existing sidewalk, install new stormwater piping, catch basins, a new fence, granite curbing and concrete curbing, according to the RFPs.

The municipalities are also asking contractors to provide three different price estimates for replacement of the sidewalk three different ways, including using concrete pavers, concrete or stamped concrete.

Throughout the last few months, the town council and village board have gone back and forth on what material they’d like to use for the sidewalk, whether it be concrete, granite or some other material. Local officials have gone on research excursions to Canada and other areas to search for a material that would hold up against the sometimes severe winter weather. The village and town, at different times throughout the last few months, have disagreed about what material they should use based on cost differences and concerns that one material may last longer than another.

“We thought it prudent to ask the contractors to bid it using the three alternatives,” Mayor Craig Randall said at a village board meeting Monday.

“This is for a project we hope to have completed over the summer,” he added.
