Saranac Lake Winter Carnival buttons on sale now

Garry Trudeau designed the button for the 2020 Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, Todd Pound did the inking, and George Corsillo did the color and typesetting.

SARANAC LAKE — Doonesbury cartoonist Garry Trudeau has released his button design for the 2020 Saranac Lake Winter Carnival.

Using this year’s Carnival theme, “Myths and Legends,” Trudeau’s illustration shows Doonesbury character Zonker as a knight riding a winged unicorn and gazing at a sword, which is held aloft through a hole in a frozen lake by a disembodied hand — like King Arthur’s legendary blade, Excalibur.

Trudeau, who was raised in Saranac Lake, has created the Winter Carnival button design each year since 1981 to benefit the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival. Even before that, Winter Carnival buttons were one of the Carnival’s longest-running traditions, collected by residents and visitors.

A poster with a design matching the button was released in December 2019 and is also on sale.

This year’s button costs $5 and is available at the following places in Saranac Lake: Adirondack Bank (Main Street and Church Street locations), Adirondack Carousel, Adirondack Daily Enterprise, Adirondack Medical Center Gift Shop, Adirondack Wine & Liquor, ADK CAVU Cafe, Amanda’s Village Motel, Ampersound, Bear Essentials Apparel, Belvedere Restaurant, Blue Line Sports, Blue Moon Cafe, Coakley Home and Hardware, Community Bank (Lake Flower Avenue and Broadway locations), Eco Living, Fusion Market, Gauthier’s Saranac Lake Inn, Goody Goody’s, Higher Peaks Glassworks, Hyde Mobil (Lake Flower Avenue and Broadway locations), Hotel Saranac, Janie’s for Hair, Kinney Drugs, Lakeview Deli, McKenzie’s Grille, NBT Bank, Origin Coffee, Rice Furniture, Rusty Nail, Saranac Lake Adult Center, Saranac Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, Saranac Lake Wine & Liquor, Saranac Village at Will Rogers, The Village Mercantile, Tops Market and the Waterhole.
