Injured ice climber rescued at Chapel Pond

Forest rangers with the state Department of Environmental Conservation made one rescue in the Adirondacks last week after receiving a call about an injured climber in the town of Keene.

The DEC’s Ray Brook dispatch received a call transferred from Essex County’s 911 dispatch at 4:29 p.m. this past Saturday. The caller reported an injured climber at Chapel Pond. The caller said he had lowered an injured 41-year-old ice climber from Albany down the remaining distance to the ground and then hiked out to state Route 73, where he flagged down a state trooper for assistance.

Forest Rangers Robbi Mecus, James Giglinto and Jamison Martin responded to the scene and were met by the Keene and Keene Valley fire departments’ Backcountry Rescue Team and Keene Valley emergency medical services. After speaking with the caller, Giglinto reported that the injured climber could have suffered a possible spinal injury from falling and striking a ledge with his head and neck.

Forest rangers and volunteers located the man, stabilized him and carried him out to Route 73, where he was taken to a local hospital by EMS. He was later transported to Albany Medical Center.
