SARANAC LAKE — The village Department of Public Works closed down Bloomingdale Avenue from Margaret Street to Pine Street Tuesday while it works on fixing a busted water main.

Village Manager John Sweeney said the broken pipe was reported around 10 a.m., and crews worked on it all throughout the afternoon.

“It was leaking through the road,” he said.

At 4 p.m., DPW workers were fixing pipes in front of the Belvedere Restaurant.

Sweeney said that particular area of Bloomingdale Avenue has had water main issues in the past.

“Anything that’s been in the ground for 50 to 100 years is going to be a problem area,” he said.

By 9 p.m., the road had reopened and cars passed through unfettered. The only visible signs of the day’s infrastructure woes were a few scattered traffic cones and a white wooden barrier set by the roadside. It’s unclear at what time the department completed repair of the water main or if additional work may be required Wednesday. Sweeney was not immediately available for an update Tuesday night.
