Nickels Redemption Center to close Oct. 26

SARANAC LAKE — The Nickels Bottle Redemption Center is closing down by the end of the month.

The redemption center on Edgewood Road is run by Citizens Advocates, a nonprofit group that serves people with developmental disabilities as well as providing services for addiction, mental health, youth, veterans and housing. Businesses such as the recycling centers in Saranac Lake and Malone, the Hhot house garden center and the Clean Sweep cleaning and lawn care service employ workers of various physical and mental abilities.

In an email, Citizens Advocates spokesman Joe Riccio said the recycling center will close Saturday, Oct. 26 because of insufficient walk-in business.

“Nickels remains committed to the community and continues to support local bottle drives and pick-up service from businesses,” he said. “The four part-time employees who worked at the redemption center have taken positions elsewhere within Citizen Advocates. New retail locations for Nickels will be considered in the future based on community need. Customers can call 518-651-2246 for assistance with pick-ups or bottle drives.”
