Massena man dies in crash on Route 30

(This article was updated at noon Thursday, Sept. 12.)

A one-vehicle crash killed a St. Lawrence County man Tuesday evening on state Route 30 north of Paul Smiths.

Alson J. Novak was 75 years old and lived in Massena, according to State Police. He was driving north on Route 30 when his vehicle went off the east side of the road and struck guide wires on the shoulder. Emergency personnel were called to the scene at 6:42 p.m.

Based on a preliminary investigation, State Police said Novak may have suffered a medical emergency before the crash.

“Witnesses at the scene removed Novak from his vehicle and began CPR until the Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad arrived and took over,” the police press release said.

Franklin County Coroner Ron Keough pronounced Novak dead at the scene of the crash, near Mountain Pond, at 7:52 p.m. Keough said Wednesday evening that he was not yet sure if an autopsy will be performed.

No one else was in the vehicle, Keough said.

The Paul Smiths-Gabriels Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene 12 minutes after the call came in with three trucks and 16 members. Firefighters did traffic control and secured the scene with assistance from the Duane Volunteer Fire Department, which provided an engine and manpower. All units were back in service at 10:09 p.m.
