Storms bring power outages, lightning

Power outages and lightning strikes, including one that nearly struck a Tupper Lake man, resulted from thunderstorms that passed through northern New York Tuesday evening.

By 5 p.m., Franklin County Director of Emergency Services Ricky Provost said local fire departments had received around 10 calls regarding storm-caused hazards, especially around Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake. A man struck by lightning and downed power lines were caused by not just one storm but many small ones that popped up, did their damage and then dissipated like departing ghosts.

A man in Tupper Lake had been near a lightning strike and needed medical attention. Saranac Lake emergency services responded. No more information was available.

Many of the downed power lines and trees ran between Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake, and at 5:30 p.m. fire departments from the villages were working to clear up the mess.

Power was also lost in several places around the county. In the town of Santa Clara between 3:30 and 3:40 p.m., 207 customers lost power. In Lake Clear, around the same time, about five customers lost power.

By 9 p.m. the National Grid outage map was clear.
