Hot, dirty fun as Warrior Run returns to Tupper Lake

TUPPER LAKE — With the temperatures approaching 90 degrees on Saturday, few participants in the Warrior Run in Tupper Lake complained about the mud or water, and most went straight to the outdoor showers after they crossed the finish line.

Despite the scorching heat and torturous course, 112 people completed either a 5-kilometer obstacle course or an 8k course. Eighteen people completed the 8K while 94 completed the 5K.

Organizer Krit Lamere said that after taking last year off, the Tupper Lake race bounced back with just about the same number of registrants as two years ago.

“We had 123 register; that’s about average,” she said. “It’s more than I expected since we didn’t have it last year. We had a couple new obstacles, and we added the 8K run, which added that many more miles and it had a steeper incline.”

“We added five obstacles — added a couple of new ones and added on to a couple of old ones. The motels are stocked, (but) the brewery makes out the best,” Lamere laughed. “They’re the best, letting us hold it here. And most of the racers are from out of town. We get some locals, but most people come from somewhere else.”

Randy Beckwith of Bloomingdale was the overall winner of the 5K, crossing the line in 26 minutes, 51.8 seconds. He was followed by Peter Moorehouse (30:36), Clifton Park’s Rich Edwards (35:41.6) in third and 12-year-old Cooper Brennan (39:20.5) fourth. Tupper Lake’s own Jessica Fortune (39:21.5) placed fifth overall and was the top woman in the race.

“I felt good coming into it,” Beckwith said. “I did this race two years ago. It was my first ever obstacle course race. I placed seventh in it, and I told my wife, ‘My goal is to come in better than seventh.’ She rolls her eyes at me because I’m really competitive and I’ve been racing Spartan Races.”

Spartan Race is a brand of obstacle course runs.

“So I felt really comfortable coming into this,” Beckwith said. “It was awesome. It was a good course. I like the mud, so that bungee cargo with just sloppy mud under it, that was my favorite one. The volunteers are awesome. They’re out there to hand you drinks and motivate you, so it’s just an awesome venue.”

In the 8K race, Gansevoort’s Garth Brennan was the overall winner with a time of 46:48.9. He was followed by Jason Grammo (49:13.7). The top female was Sarah Grammo (54:14.2), in third overall, while Virginia Ammons (54:59.4) was the second female and fourth overall. David Martin (55:56.9) rounded out the top five finishers.

Dozens of competitors were also on teams. With 17 teams competing in the 5K, the Mangy Coy Dogs took first, followed by team Marko Marko Rappman and the Dark Warriors. Just two teams took part in the 8K, with Team Preston coming in first and The Mud Puppies taking second. Team times were based on the average of the two fastest individual times for each team.
