Saranac Lake police: Cocaine, counterfeit money found in bust

SARANAC LAKE — Parole officers and village police found narcotic drugs, drug paraphernalia and counterfeit money in a Broadway apartment Thursday, police said.

Parole officers searched the home of Nancy Nixon, 41, of Saranac Lake, with village police, whom parole officers asked to come for security. After parole officers said they found narcotics, drug paraphernalia and counterfeit money, they turned over the search to police, who reported that they first went to the town of Harrietstown court, where they received a search warrant that same day, according to police Chief Charles Potthast.

In a press release, police noted items found that indicate the possession and sale of cocaine, such as 23 grams of cocaine, the street value of which is $100 per gram, according to the press release. Police said they also found 97 forged $100 bills.

After the search at 12:20 p.m., police charged Nixon and John Lopez, 24, of New York City with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree and criminal possession of a forged instrument in the first degree, both felonies.

Police also charged Lopez with unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation, saying he was found with a small amount of marijuana and $5,000 in cash.

Nixon and Lopez were arraigned in front of Harrietstown Justice Kenneth McLaughlin and both committed to the Franklin County Jail in Malone on $20,000 cash or a $40,000 bond. A violation of parole warrant was also lodged against Nixon because she is an active parolee.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.

Nixon had been previously convicted of conspiracy in the fourth degree and criminal sale of a controlled substance in the third degree, both felonies. She started her prison sentence on May 1, 2017, and was released on parole from Lakeview Shock Incarceration Center in western New York on Oct. 4, 2018.
