LAKE PLACID — A student from an unidentified school allegedly threatened Lake Placid Middle-High School students on social media, leading to the suspect’s arrest Thursday afternoon, according to Lake Placid Central School District officials.

The school received word of the threat from a student at 12:45 p.m., according to Superintendent Roger Catania.

“Upon investigation we were able to learn that a student from another school had posted a vague threatening statement on a social media site,” he said in a statement. “Local and state police informed us that the individual is in custody, and we are confident that everyone is safe.”

The arrest status of the student has not been released, and it’s unclear at this time which school the student attended and what law enforcement agency took him or her into custody.

New York State Police deferred comment to the Lake Placid Police Department, who in turn said the threat was “not a matter that (they’re) currently investigating.”

“We didn’t respond to the school, but we did have a response at the school today in reference to an investigation outside our jurisdiction,” said Lake Placid Assistant Police Chief Chuck Dobson.

The Saranac Lake Police Department declined involvement. Tupper Lake Police Department Chief Eric Proulx was not immediately available for comment.

No further information about the nature of the threat or the identity of the suspect was immediately available.

“We always encourage students and community members to follow our ‘see something, saying something’ efforts. In this case by the time we were able to learn of the concern law enforcement had the situation in hand,” said Catania. “We want to reassure our community that all students and staff are safe.”

The families of Lake Placid students received phone calls about the potential threat via OneCall.
